Definition #1: Preservatives are antimicrobials put into products to kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms over a relatively long period of time.
Definition #2: A "challenge test" is a microbiological evaluation of a product's ability to kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms over a relatively long period of time.
Without preservatives, many of the consumer products we take for granted (soaps, shampoos, cosmetics and cleaners) would literally spoil on the store shelf. Worse, they could support the growth of pathogenic (disease causing) microorganisms.
Many people are surprised to learn that virtually all consumer products contain preservatives.
The efficacy of a preservative (how well it kills or prevents germs from growing) is measured in a laboratory setting using what is known in the industry as a preservative challenge test.
While it is not FDA mandated to have products put through challenge testing (yikes!), we went ahead and did it anyway. We hired a 3rd party laboratory to comprehensively test our Instant Hand Purifier so that we could rest assured that our product would stand the test of time...and germs.
While many products use chemicals or high levels of alcohol to prevent microbial growth, a small percentage of products are preserved safely, effectively and naturally. Dr. Cleangreen’s Instant Hand Purifier was formulated without the use of chemicals or excessively high levels of alcohol (the standard “natural” formulation uses over 80% alcohol- yikes! We use only 20% organic alcohol).
Remember, what goes onto the body also goes into the body - and we know that a product is not really natural if it is preserved with chemicals or high levels of skin-damaging alcohol.
